TMC booth president Shahadul Islam was shot and injured while attempting to mediate a family dispute in the Gopalpur area of North 24 Parganas district on the night of May 7. Islam, along with local TMC Panchayat member Mosiyar Rahman, went to the house of Riyazul Islam to help resolve a long-standing conflict between Riyazul and his parents. The situation escalated when Riyazul allegedly opened fire from the roof of his house, injuring Shahadul Islam in his left hand and chest.
Following the incident, Shahadul Islam was first rushed to Barasat Government Medical College Hospital, where his condition was assessed as critical. He was later transferred to Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College Hospital for further treatment. Authorities confirmed that Shahadul Islam was the target of the shooting while attempting to resolve the family dispute. The police apprehended Riyazul Islam, who has been charged with shooting the TMC leader.
Barasat District Police Superintendent Preksha Jharkharia confirmed the arrest of Riyazul Islam. The police stated that the shooting occurred during the mediation effort and that investigations into the matter are ongoing. Local sources revealed that the conflict between Riyazul and his parents had been ongoing for a considerable period, leading them to seek the assistance of the TMC leaders to resolve the matter.
